This is spalted Hard Maple lumber. The spalting occurs when bacteria enters the wood. Makes for interesting lumber and turning blocks.

My log dog in action. He is sitting on a large cherry tree that blew down. Had some great lumber in it but unfortunately, the carpenter ants also liked this log. It was full of ant nests.
